Three years ago this weekend (Memorial Day weekend), Brett (my husband) and I were headed out on a camping trip to Mazama, followed by a site visit in Coeur d’Alene for an event I was planning. We decided to take scenic Highway 20 because it had just opened for the season, and I had never been. Brett assured me it was the most beautiful highway in the state and something to experience. We left work early, hopped in the car and took off. We stumbled across a brewery on our drive and just took our time getting to our destination. The day was sunny and nice and we were taking full advantage of it as it was supposed to start raining.

We came to a bridge in the valley of the mountains, the sun was shinning, and Brett decided to pull over and take a look. Normally I would have thought this was bizarre, we don’t usually stop and check out the scenes (we’re more get to where we’re going kind of drivers), but because this was the start of a 5 day road trip, we weren’t in a rush so I didn’t think anything of it.

We walked out on the bridge to get a better look…little did I know what was about to happen. Brett started talking and telling me all these things he loved about me and I honestly thought, “okay, thanks babe, heard this before” (he’s an extremely thoughtful, tender hearted person who is fantastic at words of affirmation, so you can see why I wasn’t surprised by this). I went to give him a hug and all of a sudden I could feel how fast his heart was beating on my chest. Then it clicked in my head, “this is really happening, OMG, this is it!”. Before I knew it he was down on one knee, I was screaming and crying at the same time and he popped up to give me a hug before I could barely get the words “yes” out of my mouth. I was in complete shock.

We had talked about marriage, a lot, and we both knew we wanted to marry each other, I just never expected it to be on an unsuspecting bridge in the middle of the highway. But you know what, I love that our proposal spot was random. I love that absolutely no one was around when it happened. I love that Brett went with his gut (he later said that he wanted to do it when the sun was out and he was so excited to ask me he didn’t want to wait all weekend, so he went for it). I love that Highway 20 now holds a special place in my heart.

So why share this? Well the extra special thing about this┬áMemorial Day weekend is that we are headed back over Highway 20 for the first time since the proposal! This time we’re looking forward to spending the weekend celebrating Brett’s birthday with friends.

Hope you have a nice, long, wonderful weekend!

love,
